How to help your kids over come Stammering!

Fluency in a language is the ability to speak smoothly, accurately, and confidently… And opposite of this (DISFLUENCY) is called stuttering or Stammering. Boys are more likely to face it. Usually it runs in the family.

When there is a certain disability in our child since the very beginning, we gradually accept it that this is how it is. But when your child used to speak normally and now he doesn’t, i can imagine the pain. How difficult and painful it must be for you to see him strain himself to talk.
Lets see how we can help you to help your little one.

๐Ÿ’Causes:

First of all lets look at the causes
*Did he fall seriously ill?
*Did he have any emotionally or physically stressful experience?
*Something which must have frightened him?
*A new member (newborn) in the family?
*Did he see somebody stuttering? ( Kids often try and copy and people see this as being cute initially, the child becomes centre of attention and tends to repeat it sooo much that it becomes his habit).

– if none of the above then its part of development. From the ages of 2 to 6 the kids vocabulary is increasing. They have soo much to say, putting the sounds and words together to form thoughts and phrases that it is a bit overwhelming esp when there is more than one language to follow.

๐ŸคทHOW CAN PARENTS HELP?

๐Ÿ“ŒAsk him to SLOW DOWN.

๐Ÿ“ŒDo not, i repeat do not loose your patience with him, do not get frustrated with his slowness of speech. You have to BE SUPPORTIVE.

๐Ÿ“ŒDon’t let anybody make fun of him. NO JOKES ABOUT IT.

๐Ÿ“ŒNO SCOLDING Scolding him wont help him.

๐Ÿ“ŒAsk him to PRACTICE infront of a mirror.(when its just the two of you).

๐Ÿ“ŒDON’T MAKE A BIG DEAL out of it. Give him all your attention as you would if he were talking normally.

๐Ÿ“ŒASK ONE QUESTION AT A TIME. Let him answer and then ask the next. It will be less over whelming for him.

FINAL WORD

Stuttering is not as much of a problem for the kid as much it is for the parents. Give your child some time. See if it’s just a stage of development or an actual problem. If it is a developmental issue it shall resolve on it’s own and at its own pace… But if you think it’s an issue now. Speech therapist are there to help you. Visiting one will help assure you if its just a developmental phase or a pathological thing. If a pathological thing then speech lessons help out a lot.
May Allah help you and your child.
