Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also known as cot death or crib death, is the sudden unexplained death of a child less than one year of age.

What causes SIDS๐Ÿคท

>Brain defects: where part of brain concerned with breathing is not properly developed.
>Low birth weight or premature babies: where lungs are not properly mature.
>Respiratory infections: cold and flu causing difficult respiration.
>Sleeping on tummy or side
>Sleeping on a soft surface
>Sharing a bed
>Over heating.

>Gender: male are more affected
>Age: 2nd-4th month is the most vulnerable age
>Family history: where siblings and cousins have been lost sec to SIDS are at greater risk
>Passive smoking: a big time risk factor. >Smoking includes cigarette smoking as well as sheesha smoking
>Premature babies: surfactant in the lungs is not properly mature, hence lung development is compromised
>Race:usually more in non white population
>Maternal age: Teenage moms being slightly immature tend to take things on a lighter perspective, do not follow certain guide lines and face these consequences.
Other Maternal causes: if during the pregnancy mother drinks alcohol and smoke cigarettes she exposes her baby to SIDS

Some ways to prevent SIDS are as follows:๐Ÿ’

โš ๏ธPlace your baby on his or her back for all sleep timesโ€”naps and at night.

โš ๏ธUse a firm, flat sleep surface, such as a mattress in a safety-approved crib, covered only by a fitted sheet.

โš ๏ธKeep your babyโ€™s sleep area (for example, a crib or bassinet) in the same room where you sleep until your baby is at least 6 months old, or ideally, until your baby is one year old.

โš ๏ธKeep soft bedding such as blankets, pillows, bumper pads, and soft toys out of your babyโ€™s sleep area. Additionally, do not cover your babyโ€™s head or allow your baby to get too hot.
โš ๏ธ Avoid smoking around the kid.

โš ๏ธ Breastfeeding prevents from SIDS
